We are proud to offer this violin made by Nicolas Gilles, Villeneuvette 2023, copy of the ‘Violon du Diable’ Guarneri ‘del Gesu’ 1734. It is accompanied by the maker’s certificate of authenticity.
Nicolas Gilles is a violin maker in Villeneuvette, France. He has won numerous awards for his instruments at the Violin Society of America competition and other competitions. His workshop is located in Villeneuvette, an ancient Royal workshop village of the 17th century. His greatest inspiration comes from the Italian makers of the 18th century (from Cremona, Venezia and Breccia) who perfected the sound and aesthetic beauty of the violin family. The study of these masterpieces led him to search for only the finest materials. Nicolas’s instruments are performed on throughout Europe and the United States by concert artists and teachers.
This violin is labeled and by Jules Gaillard, Mirecourt 1867. Mirecourt maker, and son of Louis Gaillard, Jules’ instruments are sought after for their power and depth. He also trained and collaborated with Paul Bailly. This instrument, accompanied by a certificate from Paumier, is a fine example of his work and is available for trial via shipping or in our showroom.

Baptiste Juguera was born in Toulouse, France. His interest in violin making began at the early age of six. Juguera studied violin making at the French National Violin Making School in Mirecourt. Upon graduating in 2011, he began formally assisting Frederic Chaudiere. Juguera opened his own workshop in 2012 continuing to work with Chaudiere. This violin is labeled Yann Poulain, Montpellier 2020.
Yann Poulain is a Montpellier violin maker who combines the Italian and French luthier traditions. He is a graduate of the Newark School of Violin Making in England and worked for Friedrich Alber and Frédéric Chaudière in Montpellier before opening his own shop there in 2007. He is a member of L’Association des Luthiers et Archetiers, the Académie Internationale de Musique de Montpellier, and the Violin Society of America, where he received a Certificate of Merit for Quartet Sound in 2012. Other awards include the First Prize for Viola Sound at the 2011 Fête des Luthiers in Montpellier and the “Excellence Artisinale” prize in 2013 from the French Chamber of Trades and Crafts. This violin is labeled Léon Mougenot-Gauche, Paris 1925.
Leon Mougenot was born in 1874 and established himself in Mirecourt after working for Blanchard, Jombar, and Hill and Sons, among many other prominent makers. He frequently collaborated with other prominent luthiers of his time. His instruments are known for their superior workmanship and varnish. The orange amber varnish of this violin is complemented with a warm and smooth tone. Available for trial via shipping or in our showroom.
