H. Stevens Brewster Jr., Memorial Competition for Strings
We are thrilled to announce we are sponsoring the Brewster Competition for Strings presented by Montgomery County Music Teachers Association and American String Teachers Association of MD/DC.
Dates and Eligibility:
Competition Date: Sunday, May 5th, 2019
Deadline: April 1st, 2019. Applications postmarked after that date will not be accepted. Applications will be accepted until the maximum number of students can be accommodated.
Where: Potter Violins John Kendall Recital Hall
Who: This competition is open to violin, viola, cello and bass students who have studied with the presenting teacher for at least 6 months. The teacher must be a member of MSMTA or ASTA MD/DC with an active studio in Maryland or the District of Columbia.
First Prize winner from a previous competition is not eligible to enter at the same level
Fee:
Senior Level – $35 per entry. The teacher must write ONE check for all students, payable to MCMTA
Junior Level – $30 per entry. The teacher must write ONE check for all students, payable to MCMTA
Repertoire:
Senior Level: Two works of contrasting styles and periods: Baroque, Classical, Romantic or Contemporary. Maximum playing time is 12 minutes. A concerto movement qualifies as one selection.
Junior Level: Two works of contrasting styles and periods. Maximum playing time is 10 minutes.
Note: Students must be prepared to play entire movement or composition, although judges may ask only for specific sections. All music is to be performed from memory except sonatas from the Classical and later periods. Only one work may be a sonata. Compositions must be accompanied if so composed. Contestants must supply their own accompanists. No teacher may accompany his/her own student. No changes in the program may be made after the filing of the application. Published copies of the music are to be presented to the judges and no photocopies are allowed. The competition will not be held if there are fewer than five entries and unless a minimum of three studios is represented in each category.
Awards:
Cash prizes of $200, $175 and $150 (Senior Level) and $175 and $150, $100 (Junior Level) respectively will be awarded to the 1st, 2nd, 3rd Place winners.
