John Kendall
In October 2017, Potter Violins dedicated our recital hall to John Kendall. John Kendall was a pivotal figure in the world of string teaching. He was one of the first Americans to recognize that the work of Shinichi Suzuki was revolutionary and would forever change how children learn to play the violin.
He journeyed to Japan frequently, from the late 1950s to observe and learn more about the Suzuki method. Then he would return to the US and spread the word among his colleagues about the fantastic results Suzuki was achieving with very young children. Throughout his life, John Kendall was a tireless champion of Suzuki’s “Talent Education.”
At the dedication, we were honored with a performance by the Dryden String Quartet, which is comprised of Nurit Bar-Josef (concertmaster of the National Symphony Orchestra) and three of John Kendall’s grandchildren. They are Nicolas Kendall (Time for Three and internationally recognized soloist), Yumi Kendall (cellist with the Philadelphia Orchestra), and Daniel Foster (principal violist of the National Symphony Orchestra).
The John Kendall Recital Hall hosts a variety of music-related events, including performances, workshops, symposiums on violin making, and more. Teachers, students, and parents from around the Washington DC area enjoy attending events in this warm and welcoming space that can accommodate up to 120 people. A Steinway grand piano is available for use, and there is plenty of free parking.
