In October 2017, Potter Violins dedicated its recital hall to John Kendall, a pivotal figure in the world of string teaching. He was one of the first Americans to recognize that Shinichi Suzuki’s revolutionary work would forever change how children learn to play the violin.
Beginning in the late 1950s, Kendall frequently journeyed to Japan to observe and learn about Shinichi Suzuki’s method. He would then return to the United States and spread the word among his colleagues about the fantastic results Suzuki was achieving with very young children. John Kendall became a tireless champion of Suzuki’s “Talent Education.”
At the John Kendall Recital Hall dedication, Potter Violins was honored with a performance by the Dryden String Quartet, which comprised of Nurit Bar-Josef (concertmaster of the National Symphony Orchestra) and three of John Kendall’s grandchildren, Nicolas Kendall (Time for Three and internationally recognized soloist), Yumi Kendall (cellist with the Philadelphia Orchestra), and Daniel Foster (principal violist of the National Symphony Orchestra).
The John Kendall Recital Hall hosts a variety of music-related events, including performances, workshops, symposiums on violin making, and more. Teachers, students, and parents from around the Washington DC area enjoy attending events in this warm and welcoming space that can accommodate up to 90 people. Steinway grand pianos are available for use, and there is plenty of free parking.
