Virgilio Capellini was born in Cremona, Italy in 1928. He studied at the International School of Violin Making in Cremona. In 1957, Capellini opened his workshop in Cremona with luthier Alfredo Primavera. Capellini often uses the Cremonese models of Stradivari and Guarneri del Gesu.
